BADT AI Policy

At BADT, we are committed to sustainability and deeply value justice, liberation, equity, and care. That’s why we’ve developed an AI (Artificial Intelligence) Policy—to be proactive with ongoing (and often rapid) technological changes that have developed over the last few years and ensure our students are supported as they navigate AI usage.

The policy below provides guidelines for the ethical and responsible use of AI to ensure alignment with our organizational values.

All students and staff will be asked to adhere to this policy while present in this space and our programming.

Expectations and Limitations

  • Environmental Commitment: We will use AI tools intentionally and minimize unnecessary resource consumption.

  • Transparency: All uses of AI must be disclosed to the BADT team and, where appropriate, to clients and partners.

    • For example, when a document is created with support from an AI tool, this should be disclosed within the footer of the document with the following clause: “Disclosure: An AI tool has been used to assist with the partial development of this document.”

  • Human-Centered: AI can support, but will not replace, human judgment in decision-making, care, or leadership.

  • Equity and Justice: AI tools must be assessed for bias and potential harm, especially to historically marginalized communities.

  • Privacy and Consent: Sensitive or personally identifiable data will not be shared with AI systems without informed consent from all parties.

  • Minimal and Appropriate Use Only:

    • Approved Use:

      • Writing (drafting, editing, brainstorming) may be supported by AI, provided the final product that is submitted is your original content and not fully produced by an AI tool.

      • Design support (templates, mockups, visual ideas), scheduling, and administrative tasks.

      • Research support, with fact-checking requirements.

      • Meeting notes—in accordance with privacy and consent clause above.

    • Unapproved Use:

      • Uploading confidential or sensitive client/community data into AI tools that retain data.

      • Using AI for automated decision-making in hiring, client care, or financial approvals without human oversight.

      • Surveillance, facial recognition, or monitoring tools.

      • Use of AI to develop the full content of written assignments.

Questions to Ask Yourself before Using AI:

When considering AI use, it’s important to consider your values, as well as the risks and benefits of the tool:

  • What are your top 5 values?

  • What are the short-term benefits for my workload? What are the long-term benefits for my workload?

  • What are the short-term benefits for my clients’ health and wellness? What are the long-term benefits for my clients’ health and wellness?

  • What are the short-term impacts on or risks for my workload? What are the long-term impacts or risks for my workload?

  • What are the short-term impacts or risks for my clients’ health and wellness? What are the long-term impacts or risks for my clients’ health and wellness?

  • What privacy risks exist for this AI tool?

  • How does this AI tool use and process data? Do they have any associations or partnerships with Flock, ICE, or other agencies that may misuse yours or your clients’ information?

  • Consider what is unseen in the immediate-term: What are the environmental impacts of this AI tool on yours or other communities? Do the benefits outweigh the impacts?

  • Does this AI tool use data or information without the consent of the other individuals or organizations?
